Real Pickles: the name says it all. Bite into their dill pickles and you can instantly taste the difference. The pickles are sour without being tart and astringent, the texture is fresh, and the dill performs a distinctive finish. Try out their other products: red cabbage pickle, sauerkraut, Asian-style cabbage (kimchi), ginger carrots, or their new tomatillo hot sauce. Each pickle is made with organic vegetables, a small amount of sea salt, and organic herbs and spices like dill, caraway, chili, and ginger. They undergo natural fermentation, with no vinegar. The end result is not only delicious, but also nutritious and healthy.

Organic, raw produce and the natural fermentation process that creates old-fashioned pickles just like the country store pickle barrel, isn’t the only thing that is distinctive about Dan Rosenberg’s Real Pickles. The other outstanding feature is Dan’s and his partner Addie Holland’s commitment to local. They buy all their organic cucumbers, cabbages, and carrots from local farmers in western Massachusetts and southern Vermont, and then will only ship their pickles in the northeast. They often sell out of their popular dill pickles some time in the spring because up to now they haven’t been able to find enough local pickling cucumbers to meet demand, but they won’t compromise on local.

Dan and Addie, along with a small production crew, when the seasonal glut of fresh cucumbers ripens, make their pickles in a small community processing plant in Greenfield. This year they’ll be chopping up about 75,000 pounds of cabbage, 30,000 pounds of cucumbers, and 10,000 pounds of carrots. While Dan and Addie have expansion plans in their future, they never intend to get bigger than is necessary to remain regional. They would rather help other entrepreneurs start up their own pickle companies to serve their own regions.
